GretchenTitle: Zombillenium, Vol 1: Gretchen

Author: Arthur de Pins

Zombillenium where have you been all my life? Oh how I love you.

Zombillenium is a unique amusement park to say the least. See it doesn’t just hire anyone: mere mortals need not apply—only genuine werewolves, vampires, zombies, and other citizens from the undead community are employed. Crazy shenanigans ensue.

MARVELOUS!!! Laugh-out-loud kind of marvelous. I love the wryly humorous and lighthearted take on the traditional horror genre. All the characters have unique and creative personalities. Super short read but totally worth it. Highly recommended.

Title: Burning Up

Author: Caroline B. Cooney

One or two sentences about the item: Was pretty much about the character, Macey, trying to find out more about a fire that burned the first black teacher in the town’s apartment. There are also some obstacles along the way that make it a better book then it already is.

Two or four sentences giving your opinion of the item: This was a pretty good book, but wasn’t as good as some other books I have read. It was boring at most times and only got good near the end. But that is my opinion, as I only usually enjoy books with a whole lot of violence and romance in them, and this had neither, but I guarantee that someone else may enjoy it(only a possibility). I would not recommend it.

Would you recommend this item? No

What are some books (movies or CDs) that are similar to this item? I really don’t know anything that is even similar to it. It has its own unique plot to it.

Title: The Accidental Highwayman: Being the Tale of Kit Bristol, His Horse Midnight, a Mysterious Princess, and Sundry Magical Persons Besides

Author: Ben Tripp

So, I’ve heard nothing but good things about The Accidental Highwayman: Being the Tale of Kit Bristol, His Horse Midnight, a Mysterious Princess, and Sundry Magical Persons Besides by Ben Tripp. Recently some of the hyped books have been a miss for me so I was hesitant to read this. However, this book deserves all the hype and so much more.

Mr. Kit Bristol, 16 years old, is an indentured servant to an impoverished gentleman. His life of buttered ham sandwiches suited him quite well despite the fact he was bored. Then one night his life is turned upside down when he has to flee for his life and encounters all sorts of interesting magical creatures along the way. Kit gets mixed up in a mission to rescue a princess and nothing but awesome whittiness and action ensues.

The Accidental Highwayman represents both a nod to literature and stories of days past. It not only invokes humor but adventure as well. While I fell in love with the whit right away, it was the well-crafted adventure story that kept me interested. I love and appreciate the use of language (vocabulary) in this story, I’m pretty sure I learned a few new words. The illustrations throughout the book are also impressive. While, yes this is a YA novel, I really think that adults will equally enjoy it. This is definitely a smart tale and it takes you on a fun, wild ride until the very end. I never knew where Tripp was taking me but I loved every minute of it. This is book 1 of a trilogy and I can’t wait to read the next one.

Title: Cinder

Author: Marisa Meyer

Oh Cinder how I love you so. Cinder is a re-envisioning of the fairy tale Cinderella. Cinder is a cyborg, living in New Beijing after World War 4. But more importantly, Cinder is the best mechanic in New Beijing. Naturally, everything that she earns goes to her stepmother. Her only friend is Iko, an android, who is probably one of my favorite characters of all time. One day, Prince Kai, steps into Cinder’s shop to get his android fixed, and everything changes.

Meyer steps outside of the box for this novel. Cinderella a cyborg, really? But Meyer makes it work. This is very much an original story with just enough Cinderella thrown in. All the characters are well thought out and well written. Probably more important is that the characters are believable. Of course Iko would be obsessed with Prince Kai like any ‘normal’ android. lol The characters are anything but normal and they are not cookie cutter.

There are a lot of layers to this story. Cinder is book 1 of a 4 book series and Meyers does a phenomenal job of setting up the series. And since I’ve read 3 of the 4 books already, I can tell you that the series just keeps getting better and better, which I think is very hard to do.

Title: Ship Breaker Paolo Bacigalupi

Author: Paolo Bacigalupi

I feel like Bacigalupi must have suffered some childhood trauma to be able to write such a sick and twisted dystopian future wracked by an environmental disaster. This book is not for the faint of heart.

In America’s Gulf Coast region, where grounded oil tankers are being broken down for parts, Nailer, a teenage boy, works the light crew, scavenging for copper wiring just to make quota–and hopefully live to see another day. His life takes a turn when he comes across a wrecked ship whose only survivor is a girl who is the heir to one of the biggest corporation in the world. Nailor has to decide what to do about this girl – to help her or take advantage of her strained circumstances…

Bacigalupi effortless builds this dystopian future. Very quickly I felt like I knew exactly how this incredibly different future America worked and what it looked like, and it felt horrifyingly plausible. Girls are everywhere in this book. Doing everything. Being a girl gets you no favors in this world. I love the equal opportunity suffering.

Would you recommend this item? Sorta. There is a lot of violence in this book, so be prepared.

Title: The Coldest Girl in Coldtown

Author: Holly Black

Honestly, I heard a lot of hype for this book and was like eh. Then I read somewhere the V word and all things changed. I loved me a good vampire book. And this is a GOOD Vampire book. In the acknowledgements Black states that “This book is a love letter to all the vampire books I read over and over growing up.” How true.

I read the first 18 chapters the night before I had back surgery. I would have stayed up all night and read but I figured that I needed some sleep before surgery. As soon as the haze from all the drugs wore off, I was desperate to read more.

Black has an interesting take on Vampire lore but doesn’t do anything too crazy. She also does a great job of intertwining a post-apocalyptic future with a vampire tale in the middle. While the death toll is high in this book, it wasn’t so graphic that I had to put it down to take a break because I was overwhelmed by the death / fight scenes.

“Hi, I’m Tana Bach. I’m seventeen, and a few days ago there was party and – no, never mind” I won’t give anything away. Just read the book. If you think originality is gone from vampire books, prepared to be pleasantly surprised.

Title: Leviathan (Leviathan #1)

Author: Scott Westerfeld

Deryn Sharp runs away from home and disguised as a boy joins the British Air Service. All she wants to do is to become a pilot. While the idea of a girl disguised as a boy is not drastically original, the setting of Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld is.

Deryn, or Dylan as she known throughout the book, is assigned to the Leviathan, a living whale flying ship. See in Westerfeld alternative historical universe, World War I is fought between the Darwinist and the Clankers. Westerfeld builds a unique world where Darwinists create machinery and weapons using DNA to battle against the mechanical steam powered contraptions of the Clankers – because of the sound that they make.

Westerfeld spends a great amount of time setting up this alternative World War I. While the foundation for the real world counterparts of the Central Powers and Allied Powers is there, Westerfeld does quite of bit of altering of events with a Steampunk flare, and spends about half of the book getting the reader caught up. But once the set up is over, the book really takes off.

I cannot stress enough how much the illustrations done by Keith Thompson really help shape and add to the experience of the story. Thanks to the illustrations, I was able to imagine all of the cool contraptions and gadgets developed by the Clankers and even the strange creatures engineered by the Darwinists. I found myself lingering on these pages. I would read a little, flip back to the illustrations, and just to make sure I was picturing everything ‘correctly’ in my mind.

Title: Daughter of Smoke & Bone

Author: Laini Taylor

Nicole, the teen librarian, had mentioned that if I loved Cinder, I would probably like Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor. I’m not ashamed to admit it, I wasn’t completely sold and she got it wrong. I LOVED Daughter of Smoke & Bone and it most definitely resulted in me reading past my bedtime. And yes, I am so late getting onto the bandwagon but so many books, so little time.

Karou fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real, she’s prone to disappearing on mysterious “errands”, she speaks many languages – not all of them human – and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and we are about to find out.

Now, I won’t claim that the premise of the story is original. Girl feels like something is missing meets tall, drop dead glorious, guy who helps her to uncover the truth but the writing is intoxicantly fantastic. There was just no way to put this down. The characters and the world that Taylor has created are exotic and instantly I was hooked to see where all of this was going. Taylor sets up the unraveling of who Karou is like an onion, delicately peeling away the layers until mind blowing goodness. And yes, I am reading book two now.

Title: Zombie Baseball Beatdown

Author: Paolo Bacigalupi

Zombie Baseball Beatdown is one of those books you think will be silly, gross and the perfect book for middle grade boys. Yes, there are zombies, there is baseball, and there is in fact a zombie baseball beatdown. But there is so much more to the story and characters than just a horrific zombie story. I am kicking myself for not reading this sooner. I’ve liked other books by Bacigalupi but I don’t really care about “fastballs and home runs and singles and sliders, and left-handed batters and right-handed batters.” So I was hesitant to read this. Bacigalupi basically had me at the opening lines and never let me go: “Losing sucks. Don’t let anyone tell you it builds character or any of that junk; it sucks.”

Rabi, Joe and Miguel live in a small town in corn-country Iowa. Not exactly ground zero for a zombie apocalypse but when the local meatpacking plant starts cutting corners and pumping the cows with all kinds of drugs, mayhem ensues.

Paolo Bacigalupi’s novel is a whole lot of fun, but he also packs quite the socially conscious message. It’s basically Fast Food Nation for a much younger audience. I’m not sure if many people will appreciate the aggression towards the meat industry that this book takes. I really liked how the zombies resulted in real world circumstances and not so much in fantasy. It added a level of fear, like hey this could happen.
